sssss Along with a background in photography, I have degrees in environmental science and education. I think that both help make me a better photographer. The science background has given me deeper insight into the natural world while the education experience provides me with an expanded set of tools for sharing my passion for photography.

sssssI use a combination of old-world and new-world technologies to make my photographs. In these days when digital cameras are all the rage, I remain committed to the use of film. I believe that film remains unsurpassed for sharpness and color saturation. At the same time, digial technology also plays a critical role in my work. The digital darkroom has enabled me to expand upon the limited exposure range of film to produce images that more closely match the dynamic range of human vision.

sssssI use fine-grained color slide film (both 35mm and medium format) to record my initial images. I then have selected images scanned at extremely high resolution (typically 100 Mb for 35mm; 200-300 Mb for medium format). Most of my scanning is done by West Coast Imaging in Oakhurst, California on their state-of-the-art Heidelberg Tango drum scanner. Once the images have been scanned I utilize the same techniques of burning and dodging, cropping, and color balance adjustment in the digital darkroom that photographers have been using in the chemical darkroom for decades to produce an image that matches the appearance of the subject as closely as possible.
